Sports Injuries Q & A

What are the most common sports injuries?

The three most common foot and ankle sports injuries are:

Sprains

A sprain occurs in a foot or ankle ligament. It happens when the ligament grows overstretched. Sprains cause swelling, pain, bruising, and difficulty standing or walking. Ankle sprains are a very common sports injury.

Strains

A strain occurs in a tendon or muscle in your foot or ankle. As with sprains, strains happen with overextension. Strains cause swelling, pain, bruising, and difficulty bearing weight. They may also cause muscle spasms.

Fractures

Fractures can include stable fractures, in which the bone is broken but still in position,  comminuted fractures, in which the bone breaks into at least three sections, and open compound fractures, which happen when the broken bone breaks your skin.

Although many sports injuries happen suddenly, some are more gradual. For example, Achilles tendinitis is often related to overuse like exercising for very long periods. Stress fractures, tiny cracks in the bone, are often caused by overuse as well.

What should I do if I’m injured?

If you’re injured, discontinue physical activity right away. Contact Anderson Foot & Ankle Clinic for an evaluation as soon as possible. In the meantime, take a few simple steps to reduce inflammation and pain.

  • Apply ice
  • Elevate your injured limb
  • Lightly bandage the injured area
  • Take oral anti-inflammatory medication like ibuprofen or naproxen sodium

When you come in for your evaluation, bear weight on your injured limb as little as possible to avoid further irritation and damage.

Anderson Foot & Ankle Clinic has on-site digital X-ray and ultrasound equipment, which allows Dr. Anderson to precisely diagnose your injury right away. That means he can start your treatment immediately, with no waiting for results.

How do you treat sports injuries?

In most cases, you can heal fully with conservative care. Dr. Anderson may recommend a combination of therapy types for optimal pain relief and healing. Common treatments include:

  • Physical therapy
  • Custom orthotics
  • Corticosteroid injections
  • Splint, brace, or cast

Dr. Anderson may also recommend some measures to help you avoid another sports injury. Some common tips include:

  • Using proper equipment
  • Wearing well-fitted shoes
  • Not working out too long or too hard
  • Building endurance gradually before changing your routine
  • Warming up for at least 5-10 minutes before exercise
  • Doing both low- and high-impact workouts
